Historic villages, mansions, and castles along the Vecht River are the theme of the day, including a visit to Castle de Haar. The tour drives along a river that was favoured by the wealthy Dutch Golden Age merchants who wanted to escape the bustle of Amsterdam. Castle de Haar, the largest and one of the most visited castles in the Netherlands, appears right out of a gothic fairytale, though the current structure wasn’t complete until the early 20th century. Parts of the castle do, however, date back to the 1300s, and it also boasts a long history including feuding families, French troops, age-old neglect, and eventual rebirth under the direction of famous Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Within the castle, visitors will discover a rather interestingly disjointed assortment of antiques, collected by the baron responsible for building the castle in the late 1800s. History buffs will be fascinated by all the castle has to offer, while the majority remains appreciative of the sheer splendour of the site.
