Experience some of Holland’s idyllic imagery on this guided tour of the northern countryside. Travel over lush farmland reclaimed from the Zuiderzee on your way to the open-air museum Zaanse Schans, where you’ll discover windmills of all varieties surrounded by charming wooden houses. You’ll observe a simpler way of life, representative of how the Dutch lived before industrialisation. Tour one of the area’s working windmills to see the production of oil paint or the iconic wooden shoes. From here, the tour will proceed to the village of Broek in Waterland (‘Trousers in Waterland’) where bicycles will be waiting for the entire group. The (approximately) 30-minute cycling tour proceeds as a group through the flat reclaimed lands showcasing unique Dutch countryside scenery. Next stop: a cheese farm! Here the bikes are returned, a cheese and gin tasting is enjoyed, and a tour of the farm will show you how Dutch cheese is made. After the farm experience, the tour proceeds to Edam – a charming town known for handing its name to a worldwide exported cheese. After a short walking tour in Edam, you will enjoy a wonderful three-course lunch, including drinks, in one of the monumental buildings on the main square. After lunch, it is time for your final stop: the island town of Marken, where you may feel as though you’ve travelled back in time, as the ladies of the town wear authentic, embroidered hats as part of their daily attire. You’ll want to keep your camera handy for this tour’s many photo opportunities!
